Symptoms And Treatment For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition wherein the individual experiences things which he or she can not control or even comprehend why they are doing it. Most cases of this neurobehavioral disorder are centered on children and may occur twice as much in boys compared to girls. There are also studies that show that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may retain some of the characteristics of this disorder well into adulthood. The causes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are not so well established yet but studies are tentatively pointing at genes, diet, exposure to cigarette smoke and alcohol while in the mother’s womb and mental, verbal and physical abuse early in life.

Signs Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

The name attention deficit hyperactivity disorder basically describes what the condition is. Children or adults with this disorder involuntarily do things which make them lose their concentration and make them miss things. The attention span of most children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is quite short and no matter how much they are punished for their inattention and carelessness, the possibility of them doing it again is high. Other signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are impulsive behavior, inability to concentrate or focus ones attention and restlessness or hyperactivity.

There are other signs and symptoms that may be associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but these are not solely to blame on the disorder, which is why these are not concrete symptoms of the condition. These signs include anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior, defiance and stubbornness. Having these symptoms does not automatically point to the child having the disorder. Instead, it is best to let the child undergo a series of tests that can help with the diagnosis.

Treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treatment may be a combination of psychological therapies, medication and lifestyle changes. Therapy is instrumental in helping the child or the adult, as the case may be, manage the disorder. Medication may be a necessary part of treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder because there are times when the child may exhibit destructive behavior, to others and to himself. Lifestyle changes may also be key to helping manage attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in the sense that some foods can elevate activity as well as amplify it. Many adults who had this condition when they were children may have managed without the necessary treatment for this by developing ways to manage and control themselves.
