Finding the Right County for Public Divorce Records

There are times when an individual may be searching for public divorce records, maybe to complete a genealogy, or to complete a picture of missing information in the past. There are many different websites that can help to narrow down the information about the person so that he can find out where the person lived. This is important because the only way to find the public divorce records is to contact the county office where the divorce was obtained to get the records. Many counties today will have an online database where this information can be found for free, giving basic information such as the names if the individuals involved, the date married and the date divorced. If the person needs more detailed information, he will usually have to talk to the county office to obtain the official records.

Searching

The place to start to find a divorce record is to do a public records search on the individual. This will usually provide all the places that the individual lived during the course of their lifetime. Although it could be tedious to go through all of the places and find the appropriate county for each, it is the best starting place for those who are not aware of the county in which the divorce was obtained. Once all of the counties are found, then the individual can go to the county websites and see if there is a database for that county. If there is, then the public divorce records can usually be searched online so that the individual does not have to pay a fee for the search. If there is not a database however, the individual can try to call the office and see if they will at least tell if there is a divorce record held there for the person being searched for. That way he does not waste money asking for the divorce records from all the counties without a database, trying to find the right one.

If a county does not have a database online, then the county office will need to be cost efficient by requesting that a small fee be sent with the request of the public divorce records. Usually this fee is no more than about twenty-five dollars. The cost helps to cover the time the employee has to spend finding the record and printing the material. If the individual wants a certified copy of the public divorce record, then he will sometimes have to pay more of a fee to have that type of record sent to him.
